The Biermann residence offered a unique challenge: to create a thoroughly modern house in the middle of Ashland's historic district, where every detail was subject to review by the Historic Commission, the Planning Department, and the City Council. Situated on a tiny corner lot with very restrictive setbacks, we were severely limited in our square footage allowances, which the owner wished to maximize. We proudly met these challenges by providing a very tall single story house with a small mezzanine, an elevator, and lots and lots of stainless steel, all topping a subteranian garage.
